If You Eat These Foods on the First of January, You’ll be Lucky in the Next Year.
Roast Pork, Fish Scales, Lentils
As the champagne cork pops, fireworks explode, and trumpets blare, we begin to ward off harmful forces and prepare for a more abundant, healthier, luckier New Year. Most superstitions and beliefs are tied to the last day of the year and the first day of the new one. These traditions, of course, do not escape the tables of gourmets. Here are some delicious bites, similar to the Christmas menu, that do not involve diet-friendly choices. Roast pork for luck, fish scales for wealth, champagne for prosperity.
The first and most important rule regarding food is not to devour everything on New Year’s Eve, as it is believed that doing so will lead to shortages in the coming year. But what should someone eat if they value New Year’s luck?

Chicken or Pork?
Pay attention not to consume chicken or other poultry, as superstition suggests they scratch backwards, taking away our luck. In contrast, pork brings luck because pigs root forward, pushing out our luck. So the best thing to do is to taste the New Year’s roast pork.
Roasted Pork
The Indispensable Sausage
In the old days, it wasn’t sausages that were the customary food on New Year’s Day but the leftovers from Christmas pig slaughters. Sausages became popular as a city custom, replacing blood sausage and liverwurst.

Why Champagne?
During celebrations, we often uncork champagne. However, on New Year’s Eve, we don’t just sip the sparkling drink for celebration. In the past, this privilege was exclusive to the rich — although now accessible to everyone — and its consumption was endowed with properties bringing prosperity.

With or without Fish?
It’s also wise to be cautious with fish because in non-riverine cities, eating fish might make your luck swim away. However, if you consume fish with scales in a riverside location, it brings luck. They say the number of scales on the fish corresponds to the amount of money that will come to your home.

Lentils, Beans, Poppy Seeds…
On New Year’s Day, it’s worth consuming some small grains as they symbolize financial well-being. The most popular is lentil stew, but let’s not forget poppy seed strudel either. According to tradition, life stretches as long as strudel dough.

Other Charms
The superstitions are far from over: Rise early and wash with clean, cold water to stay healthy in the new year. Carefully consider whom you invite into your home on the first day of the year, as a male visitor brings luck, while a female visitor signifies misfortune. In many places, people kneaded money into pastries, and whoever finds it will have a lucky, prosperous year.
Lucky Pastries
It’s important, therefore, to be mindful of what we eat and do on the first day of the year, as belief suggests we can expect a year shaped by our actions on January 1st. Knowing this, let’s avoid laziness, quarrels, spending recklessly, and taking anything out of the house, for ‘the cow’s benefit will fly away.
Don’t forget to share it with your friends. 🙂
