The Well in the Being | Monika Szijjarto | Expert Article

Well-being is often seen as something that depends on external circumstances — success, approval, or stability in the world around us. But true well-being comes from a deeper source. This article explores the real meaning of well-being and why lasting stability begins with discovering and protecting your inner source, rather than relying on the unpredictable “weather” of life.

The English language hides a structural truth in plain sight. We talk about well-being as if it were a trophy to be collected or a destination to reach, but the word itself points somewhere else. It points to the well—the spring, the source, the internal supply that flows regardless of the forecast. To be “well” is not a reflection of the weather; it is a statement about the depth of one’s own source.

The Well in the Being, Clean Water

Most of life is currently lived in a state of rainwater harvesting. We have become experts at placing barrels under the eaves of our lives, waiting for the sky to provide. We wait for the market to rise, for the boss to nod, or for the social climate to stay temperate. When it rains, the barrels are full, and we mistake this temporary accumulation for stability. But a barrel is not a well. A barrel is a hostage to the clouds. When the drought hits—and in business and life, the drought always hits—the rainwater harvester is the first to thirst. They are left staring at the sky, paralysed by an environment they cannot control.

Old Well

The shift toward true well-being happens the moment the focus moves from the sky to the ground beneath the feet. It is the realisation that stability is a matter of infrastructure, not luck. This isn’t about positive thinking or creating a comforting myth; it is about the cold, functional reality of where your resources come from.

A well reaches down into the groundwater, into a strata that doesn’t know the sun exists. It is a private microclimate. When you tap into this internal source, the external noise—the market crashes, the criticisms, the frantic pace of the “weather” outside—remains a surface-level event. It might kick up some dust, but it never reaches the water table. The need to import emotional or mental validation from the outside simply vanishes because the source is local. It is a shift from being a consumer of circumstances to being the owner of an internal supply.

Deep Well

This internal resource isn’t something to be built from scratch; it is something to be uncovered. We spend our days backfilling our own sources with the debris of constant stimulus, news, and the noise of other people’s expectations. Clearing that debris isn’t a “wellness tip”—it is a maintenance of the internal infrastructure. When the standards by which a person operates are higher and more consistent than the demands the world places on them, the water remains pure. It is no longer filtered through the chaotic filters of the world.

Anxiety is almost always a preoccupation with a future drought. But a well, by its very nature, only functions in the here and now. You cannot drink tomorrow’s water today, and you don’t need to. If the well is deep enough, the forecast becomes irrelevant. In the end, well-being is the quiet, unsentimental difference between those who spend their lives praying for rain and those who have found the spring.
