Creative Image Cards as Inner Mirrors – A Meeting with Ourselves

When the Same Image Tells a Different Story to Each of Us

Creative image cards can become powerful tools for self-reflection, helping us explore thoughts, feelings and personal stories that may be difficult to put into words. Discover how the images we are drawn to can reveal something about our inner world.

When we stand in front of an image, we often believe that we are looking at what is in front of us, while at least as much, we are seeing ourselves in it. A colour, a shape, a tiny detail or even the atmosphere of the image as a whole can evoke personal associations that bring us closer to what we are feeling, what we desire, or what is currently changing within us. If I placed the same painting in front of ten people, I would probably hear ten different stories about it, because one person might discover freedom in it, another might see loneliness, while a third person might be reminded of an old memory, a relationship or a particular situation in their life.

The image itself, of course, remains the same.

The difference lies in the fact that we all bring our own experiences, memories, feelings, values and current life circumstances with us when we encounter it. What we notice in an image can therefore tell us at least as much about ourselves as it does about the artwork itself. This is one of the reasons why images can play such an exciting role in self-reflection, and why, years ago, I also began to explore how the world of painting could be brought closer to the inner processes that I encounter every day as a helping professional.

Why Does Visual Association Work?

Our relationship with images begins much earlier than the moment when we learn to precisely express our thoughts and feelings. Visual impressions become connected to memories, moods and personal meanings, which is why an image can often touch inner experiences that are more difficult to access through questions alone. When we look at an image, we instinctively begin to search within it for something that feels familiar to us in some way. It may be a colour, a gaze, a movement, a shape or a tiny detail that someone else might pass by without noticing. Yet our attention lingers precisely there, and this first connection can often be interesting in itself.

Why was this the first thing I noticed?

Why does it affect me?

Why does another detail repel me?

Why do I feel that this image is somehow about me right now?

The power of visual association lies precisely in its personal nature, because we can attach completely different meanings to the same image, and these meanings can also change during different periods of our lives. A card that represents freedom to me today may perhaps tell me about letting go a few years from now, because I myself will have changed in the meantime.

When the Image Becomes an Inner Mirror

My creative image cards are based on my own hand-painted artworks, and when I created them, it was important to me that the images left enough openness for the viewer’s own story. For me, therefore, it is a particularly exciting moment when someone discovers a meaning in one of my images that I had never thought of as the creator.

This is when it becomes truly visible that a completed artwork, at a certain point, begins to live a life of its own, because it meets another person’s life story, and something entirely new is born from this encounter.

In this sense, a creative image card can become an inner mirror. A mirror in which we rarely see precise outlines, yet can still recognise something of ourselves.

Sometimes, it is a feeling.

At other times, a desire, a resource or a possible direction.

And sometimes we simply notice that we want to stay with a single image for longer, and perhaps this alone is enough to make us curious about why it has spoken to us precisely now.

An Image in Our Own Self-Reflection

Using creative image cards does not necessarily require a special occasion. A single image can begin a short inner dialogue at the end of a busy day, before making a decision, or during a period when we would like to see more clearly what is happening within us.

At such times, curiosity is particularly important to me, because when we immediately try to decipher an image, we can easily return to our familiar patterns of thinking. It can be much more interesting to leave its meaning open for a while and observe what thoughts, memories or feelings become connected to it.

An image may, for example, bring the realisation that we want more of something in our lives, while another card may direct our attention towards the resources we already have available to us. This is why visual self-reflection is, for me, such a special way of discovering our own answers.

When the Image Creates a Connection Between Two People

As a helping professional, I also see another side of this process, because in the hands of coaches, educators and other helping professionals, creative image cards can become a special starting point for conversations.

There are situations when someone knows exactly what they would like to say, and there are also moments when they simply feel that something is occupying their thoughts, while they have not yet found the right words for it. At such times, an image creates a shared point of reference to which both people can connect.

The helping professional’s attention can meanwhile remain focused on what the other person sees in the image, what meaning they give it, and what possibilities they discover through it. In this way, the image leaves the freedom of personal interpretation open, while also creating space for conversations that might otherwise never even begin.

For me, this is one of the most beautiful parts of working with creative image cards, because the same painting meets the story of a different person again and again, and with every encounter, it becomes something slightly different.

Recognising Our Own Story

This is why I like to imagine images as inner mirrors. A traditional mirror shows us what we look like from the outside, while an image can sometimes give us an opportunity to notice what is occupying us on the inside.

When, while looking at a single creative image card, the feeling suddenly arises within us that “this is me right now”, a fragment of our own story has, in a sense, become visible. It may be a part that we already know well, or it may be something that we have previously paid less attention to.

The image remains the same, while we are already looking at it in a slightly different way.

Perhaps at ourselves, too.

A Short Art Coaching Exercise – The Image That Would Choose Me

Spread out one of the packs from the Creative Image Cards series in front of you so that you can see all the cards clearly, then give yourself a few moments to look through them. This time, imagine that the direction of the choice is reversed, and ask yourself:

If one image from these were to choose me right now, which one would it be?

Once you have chosen one, look at it carefully and allow your own story to connect with it.

Five solution-focused questions may help you continue your reflection:

  1. What do I discover in this image that is already working well in my life?
  2. What strength or inner resource might this image represent for me?
  3. If the image showed that I had moved a little closer to the life in which I feel comfortable, what would I notice had changed?
  4. What is already present in my life, even to the smallest extent, of what this image represents for me?
  5. What could be the smallest next step that I could take with me from this insight into my everyday life?

It is worth keeping the chosen card in sight for a little while longer, because it may happen that a few days later a different detail attracts your attention, and with it another layer of your own story may reveal itself.

Meeting My Finished Painting

When I create a painting, I naturally also carry feelings, thoughts and inner states within me that somehow become part of the artwork. Yet one of the most exciting moments for me is always when the image sets off on its own journey and meets someone else’s gaze.

If you ever look through my paintings or my hand-painted Creative Image Cards, perhaps it is worth putting aside for a moment the question of which one you like best, and instead observing which one holds your gaze for just a little longer.

Perhaps because of its colours.

Perhaps because of a tiny detail.

And it may also be that you cannot yet put the reason into words.

This is what makes the encounter so exciting, because sometimes an image begins to tell us something about ourselves when we are still simply looking at it.

A painting’s story begins on the canvas, but in the viewer it continues to be written. And from there, our own story continues, too.
