Many around the world are learning English as a second language and aim to confidently and smoothly communicate in English within the business realm due to their profession. If you belong to this group and are curious about how to adopt the mindset of successful language learners and amplify your efficiency in developing your business English, then this article is for you.
Positive Mindset in Learning English
Throughout my career as a language teacher, I have encountered numerous situations of managers and entrepreneurs struggling with the necessity of fluent English language skills for their work, yet their negative mindset hinders them from achieving this.
What do we mean by a negative mindset?
Well, it’s the fact that many:
– Dread even the thought of speaking with foreign colleagues or partners,
– Prefer to delegate representation and negotiation tasks within their company,
– Prefer written communication, avoiding face-to-face meetings and phone calls,
– Claim they have no “ear” for languages,
– Strive for grammatical perfection in every sentence,
– Compare their English skills to others’,
– Believe that others devalue them because of their weaker English proficiency.
Unfortunately, if these biases are not recognized and altered in time, they can completely block the language learning process, damage self-esteem and confidence, and set back progress for years.
Practicing English is essential.
Yet, the goal should be that they:
– Can negotiate smoothly with business partners,
– Speak fluently with foreign colleagues,
– Articulate themselves eloquently in meetings,
– Present confidently in negotiations without inhibition,
– Don’t struggle for words when they want to express something,
– Can use English joyfully and confidently in their work.
The big challenge in this situation is how to break free from this state, which some language learners currently perceive as a failure in their relationship with the English language.
The problem is that as long as negative programs run in their minds regarding their language performance, and until they take decisive steps to change their harmful beliefs, unfortunately, miracles cannot be expected.
So, how can you steer your mindset towards success and excel in developing your business English if you also need proficient language skills but struggle to master the language at a professional level?
1. Set a clear goal you want to achieve!
Defining a precise goal is as important for our brains as when an arrow is aimed and shot toward a target.
By considering situations where you need English in your daily work, you can pinpoint exactly what vocabulary, expressions, and grammatical structures you should learn, and by focusing solely on these, you can progress much more effectively in your studies.
2. Incorporate progression into your learning!
To experience success in using English, you must also follow the principle of progression. Weightlifters start with lighter weights and gradually increase the load during their training.
Arrange meetings in English
First, set tasks that, when completed, you can reward yourself for, and then, armed with the feeling of success, you can raise the bar. For example, instead of writing an email, call and schedule the next meeting time with one of your foreign colleagues. Once you’ve successfully done this, organize a video call where you report on the status of one of your projects in the presence of multiple people.
3. Recall your past successes!
Everyone has been successful at something before, and so have you. It’s not about what we were successful in but the feeling of success that accompanied it.
Recall these successes, and when fear fills you in an English-speaking situation, think back to these successes, relive them, recall the feeling you experienced then, and draw strength from it. You’ll find yourself feeling much more confident and able to negotiate with your foreign business partners and colleagues more easily.
4. Dare to make mistakes!
Make mistakes in a foreign language
Many people almost perceive making mistakes as a sin. They believe they have to say everything perfectly, otherwise, they won’t feel like an equal partner in their English communication.
Yet, making mistakes is the key to growth. It propels us forward, and we learn the most from our mistakes.
Even a torpedo fulfils its mission by making mistakes and constantly correcting them until it reaches its goal.
So, don’t be afraid to make mistakes; it’s a natural part of your language development. The more you try and fail, the faster you’ll reach your goal.
5. Replace your negative thoughts with positive ones!
When feelings overwhelm you that you won’t be able to do something, overcome worry with positive thoughts.
For instance, instead of telling yourself before a meeting where you have to present in English in front of many people, “I won’t remember the words, they’ll laugh at my weak English skills,” say, “I can smoothly and confidently express myself in English, I’m improving my English skills.”
If you project negative images into the future, the result will be tension and stress. However, if you fill your thoughts with positive images, the negative feelings will naturally dissipate, and pleasant, constructive feelings will take their place.
